Understanding the Essentials of Getting a Student Visa

Icon

1. What is a visa?

A student visa is an official stamp in your passport, issued by a consulate of the destination country. It allows you to study abroad legally. To get a visa, you need to provide specific documents to the consulate, such as those for Spain, which has consulates in various U.S. cities.

Who needs a student visa?

You’ll need a student visa if your program lasts over 90 days or if you’re not a citizen of the destination country. Without it, you may be denied entry or deported. Your API program coordinator or Visa team will confirm if your program requires one.

How long does it take to get a visa?

Getting a visa usually takes 8-12 weeks or more. Start early! Complete your API application and onboarding forms quickly to begin the visa process. Note: Once you apply, you can’t travel internationally until your passport and visa are returned.

How do I get a student visa?

Student visa requirements vary by country and consulate. Your API coordinator will guide you on the steps. Some students going to Spain or Italy can use the API Group Processing Service. For others, work directly with the consulate, allowing enough time to complete the process.

What do I need for my visa appointment?

  • Passport: Must be valid for at least six months beyond your program.
  • API Acceptance Letter: Proof of program acceptance.
  • API Visa Letter: Proof of enrollment, insurance, and expenses.
  • CISI Insurance Letter:Proof of health coverage abroad.
  • Host University Letter: Confirmation of enrollment.
  • Additional Requirements: Vary by country; check consulate links.

Note for Minors: Minors may need extra documentation. Start early to ensure timely processing.
